Exhibition Opening Saturday 4 October 2025, 4-6pm
This exhibition brings together drawings and wall works by pioneering conceptual artist Ian Milliss, alongside a selection of non-objective and geometric abstraction by regional artists. Rooted in pure form and colour, non-objective art invites contemplation beyond representation, while geometric abstraction—emerging in the early 20th century—employs pattern, precision, and spatial tension to evoke harmony, structure, and disruption. Together, these genres offer fertile ground for reflection and connection.
Ian Milliss, whose practice since the 1970s has redefined the artist’s role as a catalyst for cultural change, anchors the exhibition’s commitment to conceptual rigour and artistic evolution. The exhibition also celebrates the voices of regional artists—many working in isolation—whose contributions expand and enrich the conversation around abstraction. Through an open call for Expressions of Interest, artists from Kandos, Capertee Valley, Sofala, Maitland, and Yetholme share their work, fostering dialogue and visibility across geographic and aesthetic boundaries.
Participating artists include Maralyn Bennett, Silas Clifford Smith, Leo Cremonese, Rachel Hannan, Greg Hill, Stephen Hobbs, Jenny More, Cate McCarthy, Georgina Pollard, and Peter Swain. The exhibition is curated by creative producer Gabrielle Bates, who lives and works on Dabee Wiradjuri land in Kandos.
